Miglas – Ali-Clad Windows and Doors [BLP]

Overview:

WERS certified double glazed, thermally efficient hybrid solid timber and aluminium clad windows and doors. Suitable for residential and light, low rise commercial applications.

Product Description:

Miglas’ Ali-Clad range are hardwood timber frames with exterior aluminium cladding, double glazed (insulated glass units or IGUs) windows and doors. The external aluminium cladding can be powder-coated in a range of architectural colours, and provides a low maintenance, long-life product that overall achieves the thermal and aesthetic benefits of timber.

Miglas windows are certified under the Window Energy Rating Scheme (WERS). Product achieves low U-value ratings (indicating a higher resistance to heat flow) and low air infiltration results (indicating minimal leakage), indicating better performing windows. The range generally achieves 3 to 4 cooling and heating star energy ratings, indicating that the window will reduce solar heat gain and winter heat loss. To obtain an ecospecifier listing, windows must be rated in the top 25% of the market performance of a rating scheme.  Option 4Gy/12Ar/6LE80i 5.5 and 6 stars and achieves this criterion.

The Truth high quality hardware and locks provide easy operation and security for windows. Electric power window operation for fresh air ventilation and hot air purging, and electronic door locking is available. The IGUs are fully sealed to prevent condensation and provide noise reduction and thermal efficiency. A 7 year warranty is offered and the product range has an expected life of 50 years plus if properly maintained.

Issue of Concern

Timber certification: The timber sourced is predominantly not Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. Various timber certification schemes are currently in operation in regards to the sustainable and responsible management of forests as sources of wood. According to ecospecifier, an analysis of the various timber certification schemes reveals that the FSC is the most rigorous and robust certification, due to the stringent criteria followed (e.g. FSC is the only scheme based on a clear set of minimum performance based criteria, prohibits the conversion of forests to plantations, and also prohibits the use of GMO trees and toxic baiting). See Timber Technical Guide for further information.
