Briggs Veneers - Non-FSC eco-cert ™ Veneers [BLP] [China - Cat.5]
Overview:
A range of sustainable raw timber veneers from managed timber sources, and all are GECA certified. Suitable for interior veneering applications for residential and commercial use.
Product Description:
Within Briggs’ range of timber veneers are a selection of products from both FSC (see separate listing) and non-FSC certified timber sources. The non-FSC veneers are certified under other schemes with full chain-of-custody, such as the AFS (Australian Forestry Standard) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification). There are also several veneers made from plantation timber. All veneers within this listing are certified under the GECA (Good Environmental Choice) ecolabel. For a full assessment of the relative merits of the various schemes- see the Timber Technical Guide.
The range is suitable for standard veneering of furniture, joinery, panelling, kitchens, bathrooms and other interior applications for residential and commercial use. Timber veneer is not suitable for areas of high wear, wet areas or exterior applications.
The raw timber veneers have been emission tested and found to be low in VOC and formaldehyde emissions (TrueGrain below E1 and other non-FSC range below Super E0- Japanese F4Star).
For minimal health and environmental impact, it is recommended that non-toxic, low VOC and formaldehyde substrates, glues and coatings are used to complement these health and environmentally preferable raw veneers. Both FSC and GECA certified substrate boards (such as MDF) are readily available in Australia (see E0 MDF listings).
Use of these products are likely to contribute to the achievement of LEED credits (see disclaimer below). Subscribers please click here to view full enhanced content listing.

ecospecifier Issues of Concern / Red Lights
Issue of Concern
Timber Certification: Although the wood fibre used to make the veneers is certified under different certification schemes and therefore from responsibly managed forests and well managed plantations these products do not come from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified sources. Various timber certification schemes are currently in operation in regards to the sustainable and responsible management of forests as sources of wood. According to ecospecifier, an analysis of the various timber certification schemes reveals that the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC, Chain of Custody) is the most rigorous and robust certification, due to the stringent criteria followed. FSC is the only scheme based on a clear set of minimum performance based criteria, prohibits the conversion of forests to plantations, and also prohibits the use of GMO trees and toxic baiting. See Timber & Wood Products Technical Guide for further information.
Red Light Comment
Minor OH&S Issue: Wood dust is classified as carcinogenic (group 1) to humans by the IARC. As the product is used in solid form it is not considered to be of risk in use. This red light comment relates to OH&S, if machining, sawing, drilling, routing, laser cutting or sanding is to be done of the veneer sheet before it is joined to the substrate, or afterwards of the finished veneer panel there are effective precautions that can be taken to minimise dust level exposure resulting from such activities, such as personal protective equipment (PPE).
